Flavors: Beef
Huge, not portable, mushy interior, needs salt/herbs
Crust was tasty
Grade: C/C-

 

Gram's in Escanaba

Flavors: Beef and potato, Beef and potato and rutabaga
Small cubes, tender and not overdone, portable, flavor wasn't as good as Jack's
Crust was tender, pretty soft
Grade: B/B+

 

Jack's fresh market in Manistique

Flavors: Veggie, Beef and mushroom, Beef and potato
Better flavor
Chunks were larger than Gram's, interior slightly more mushy than Gram's
Crust was fine, slightly crispier than Gram's
Grade: B+/A-

 

Muldoon's in Munising

Flavors: Beef
Most portable
Decent flavor
Larger chunks but not too mushy
Crust was fine
Grade: B/B+

 

Lawry's in Marquette

Flavors: Garden medley
Broccoli tasted weird in it (maybe some cheese)
Not the most flavorful but not the least
Most portable so far
Grade: B-

The Sauna Trail Upper Peninsula Travel Guide
Our recommendations for saunas, restaurants, and sights.

SAUNA RENTALS

There are two good, sandy bays on the southeast side of the Keweenaw: Big Traverse Bay, Rabbit Bay. Camp Lahti has a large sauna at their campground.

Rocky shores elsewhere, and more wind on the North and West sides.

Tips for finding good saunas here.

 

FOODS

PASTIES

Amy J's - scallopped slices filling with excellent textures and pure flavors

Moahawk Superette - probably the most flavorful pasty we've had

RESTAURANTS

Rodeo Mexican Kitchen - a local "better than Chipotle" shop that does a great job

The Wood'n Spoon - Excellent baked goods

Petersen's Smoked Fish Market & Four Suns Fish & Chips

GROCERY

Tadych's in Houghton, Michigan - largest grocery in the area with some local items

Sunday Lake Co-Op in Wakefield, Michigan - some unique varieties of local sausages

 

SIGHTS & SHOPS

Black Creek Nature Sanctuary - a moderately challenging hike through a beautiful creek and beach area

Estivant Pines - a relatively easy hike amongst some old growth white pines

Copper Harbor - small town at the end of the road

Artis Books - used book store with loads of charm

Tips for Finding Public Saunas and Rentals with Saunas

Find a Finnish Friend

They know HOW to sauna and often know where the best hidden gems are.

 

Things to Look For in a Public Sauna

- Lots of drainage
- Ample ventilation
- Benches up high
- Strong heat (180 F + at head height)
- Rocks for making steam
- Facilities for bathing. Sauna is, after all, the Finnish hot air, steam bath.
These should be in every public sauna. There are so many mobile sauna rentals today that are missing one, and sometimes many, of these basics.

 

How to Search for Sauna Rentals

Google has a format for searching an specific website. You can see the structure of the query in the links below. This can be used to search most websites. I’ve provided two different examples for the states of Minnesota and Michigan, but you can use the template to search for sauna rentals in any state. At the end of each link, I’ve provided [in square brackets] the total results for each search (at the time of this writing).
